As fashion savvy as we may be in our civilized lives, we are still part of a greater ecosystem that has evolved over the past millions of years. A perfectly balanced system where every single organism plays an important role. A system that has the ability to heal itself and restore its balance – if only we’d give it a chance.
Our civilization is completely dependent on the plants, animals and microorganisms that provide for our ecosystem. Without the pollination, the crops, the food from the oceans and a livable climate, we need to start looking for another place to live. As human beings, and the very reason behind the rapid decline in biodiversity, we believe it is our duty to help restore the balance of the ecosystem.
At KnowledgeCotton Apparel we try to minimize our environmental footprint in every way possible. The use of organic cotton is just one thing, but it makes a huge difference. Not only to the farmers and their families growing cotton, but to the environment.
Organic cotton means that the cotton has been grown on fields without the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides and defoliants. Only natural fertilisers are allowed. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are prohibited. The water usage is 91% lower than that of conventional cotton and organic cotton saves 46% of CO₂ compared to conventional cotton as well.
We can no longer live as if we had the resources from ‘1.6 planets’. We all need to use the planet’s resources more responsibly and get the balance right in our ecosystem. Now.
