We can guess you didn't miss the gloomy report from the United Nations’ scientific panel on climate change? Time is scarce, friends. Even more scarce than we thought. So far, global emissions have not begun to decline at all, so there is obviously a very big challenge ahead. But we can still turn things around – by acting together.
Here at KnowledgeCotton Apparel our objective for 2025 is to become 100% carbon-neutral throughout our supply and distribution chain. It is our goal to produce our garments in carbon-neutral factories. This is a great challenge in our industry and a journey that we have to take on with bits at a time.
Next year we are aiming to increase our share of carbon-neutral produced pieces to count for 30% of the total production. During 2019 we have decided to become carbon-neutral in our company, as well as our distribution and import transportation. We also want to increase our own “Knowledge Forest” in India by another 500 trees.
Our planet will be passed on to future generations, and we want to make sure it is in the best condition possible when we do. Time has come to show the way.
2017 was the year we launched our new carbon-neutral strategy.
Climate change is real and with the increases in temperature, the world is about to be faced with adverse effects that will have unseen repercussions. We believe that we are the generation of people and businesses who need to steer the necessary change.
We recognize that the textile industry is energy-intensive and that action is needed.
The year 2017/18 was a time when we really began to look into the effects of our carbon footprint. We have invested a lot of time and effort, and working out how to approach this issue was a real learning process for us. In the past year, we took some of the first steps. We know that our actions will always have a carbon footprint but we are determined to keep it as low as possible. If we are aware of our impact, we can offset it with our climate action project, which then improves the overall carbon situation in the world. We have teamed up with a professional partner to help us do the mapping and are on our way to carbon neutrality as a company and also in terms of our shipping and distribution.
It is our goal to produce our garments in carbon-neutral factories. The challenge here is that in some countries the energy is government-controlled. However, in some countries and with some suppliers we are seeing great willingness and an understanding of this common challenge of climate change. We have a supplier who is now working on 100% green energy in the full supply chain factory. More suppliers are about to take important steps on this journey in the coming year.
It was our goal in the 2017/18 production year to increase our carbon-neutral production to 20%. We achieved 13.60%.
Planting trees to offset our carbon footprint
In India, we invested in a KnowledgeCotton Apparel forest to compensate the carbon emissions caused by producing our garments. Right now, we have a forest of 1,040 trees that compensates carbon equal to the production of shirts.
We plant one new tree for every 25th shirt we increase our production by. It is our intention to grow and care for this forest and make it a valuable piece of nature for the planet.
