It's already happening

Today, May 22nd, we highlight the International Day for Biological Diversity. It may not seem like the most exciting highlight of the year, so let's be clear here. Biological Diversity is a matter of survival.

We’re on the brink of Earth’s sixth mass extinction, scientists say. The number of species in the world is now declining at an alarming rate due to human activity. And we destroy for both nature and ourselves. Within just a few years, two-thirds of all the world’s animals will be gone.

Humanity is totally dependent on a well-functioning ecosystem. It is the basis for our existence, for our water, food, medicine, clothing, energy and more. As human beings, and the very cause of the problem, we believe it is our duty to restore the balance of the ecosystem.

By reducing the threat to biodiversity, we can also improve human health, encourage sustainable development and tackle the climate crisis. So, promoting biodiversity is actually a way of solving a number of major challenges facing humanity.

Still, it’s happening right now. It’s not a question if a mass extinction is going on, but rather to establish a framework that will “bend the curve” on biodiversity loss. But there’s hope. ‘We’re part of the solution’ is the theme for the UN International Day for Biological Diversity 2021, meaning we can make change if we act now.

Take action. We're all part of the solution.
